Free Advice for Achilles Tendon Surgery – Start Healing Today

At the Foot and Ankle Center of Arizona, we know healing can be hard. If you had Achilles tendon surgery, you may feel pain or worry. That’s normal. But don’t worry—you are not alone.

Dr. Kris A. DiNucci, our foot and ankle expert, is here to help. Let’s talk about easy steps to help your foot feel better. These tips are safe, simple, and made for everyone.

Rest Is Very Important

After surgery, your foot needs lots of rest. This helps your tendon heal without stress. Don’t try to walk on your feet too soon.

Use crutches, a walker, or a scooter if needed. Try not to stand or walk for long. Even standing too long can hurt your healing.

Rest is not being lazy. It’s smart. Let your foot relax and do its job.

Keep Your Foot Up and Use Ice

After surgery, your foot may swell. That’s okay! But too much swelling can slow your healing.

Try this:

  • Sit or lie down.
  • Place pillows under your foot.
  • Keep your feet higher than your heart.

Also, use ice packs a few times each day. Wrap the ice in a towel first. Never place ice right on the skin. This helps with swelling and pain.

Eat Healthy Foods and Drink Water

Food gives your body power to heal. Eat foods that help your tendon grow strong.

Try to eat:

  • Chicken, fish, or lean meat
  • Fresh fruits like apples or bananas
  • Veggies like carrots or spinach
  • Whole grains like oatmeal or rice

Don’t forget to drink lots of water! Water keeps your muscles and skin healthy. Try not to drink soda or eat too many sweets.

Follow Doctor DiNucci’s Healing Plan

Dr. Kris A. DiNucci will give you a special healing plan. This plan is just for you and your feet.

You may get:

  • Pain medicine
  • A boot or cast
  • Easy exercises later on

Be sure to:

  • Take your medicine as told
  • Keep all follow-up visits
  • Tell us if something feels wrong

Our team is always ready to listen and help.

Protect the Surgery Area

Your foot has a cut from the surgery. That area needs to stay clean and dry.

Here’s how to keep it safe:

  • Don’t get it wet in the shower
  • Use a waterproof cover
  • Don’t touch or scratch the stitches
  • Watch for signs of infection

Look out for redness, pus, or a bad smell. If you see these signs, call us right away.

Move a Little, But Only When Told

First, you must rest. But later, your doctor may say to move a bit.

You may do small ankle movements or stretches. These help your tendon stay strong. But do not do this too early!

Moving too soon can hurt your tendon again. Only do what the doctor says is safe.

Wear the Right Support

You might wear a boot or brace after surgery. This keeps your foot safe and still.

Always wear it the right way. Do not walk without it until the doctor says it’s okay. The boot gives your tendon time to heal.

Later, you may need a shoe with soft support. Your doctor will tell you what’s best.

Keep a Positive Mind

Healing takes time. Some days may feel slow. But every day your foot is healing.

Stay calm and be kind to yourself. You are doing a great job just by resting. Talk to your family or friends if you feel sad.

Our team is always here for you, too. Good thoughts help your body heal faster.

Extra Tip: Avoid Smoking or Alcohol

If you smoke or drink a lot, healing may take longer. Smoking lowers blood flow to your foot. Alcohol can slow your body’s work too.

Try to stop during your healing time. Your foot will thank you!
